Please note: This article discusses irregular shift patterns in the Production Insights Product only. Andon Schedules can be set up any way you would a google or outlook calendar. Not sure which one you need? See Scheduling Systems in Factbird.
Factbird's shift management system is designed for straightforward, repeating shift patterns that most manufacturing operations require. The system excels at managing consistent weekly schedules where shifts follow predictable patterns—Monday morning shifts, Tuesday afternoon shifts, and so on. However, in rare circumstances, some manufacturing operations may require irregular shift patterns that change weekly and cannot be easily predicted or systematized.
Important Notice: We strongly discourage the use of complex, irregular shift patterns as they significantly increase operational complexity and can reduce the effectiveness of Factbird's automated production tracking features. This functionality should only be used when absolutely necessary and when simpler alternatives have been exhausted.
Factbird's shift functionality serves a fundamental purpose: identifying planned versus unplanned production time. The system is intentionally simple and is primarily designed to:
- Define scheduled production periods - When your line is expected to be running
- Enable automatic stop registration - Automatically mark time outside shifts as unplanned downtime
- Support consistent weekly patterns - Handle repeating schedules that follow predictable cycles
- Facilitate accurate OEE calculations - Ensure performance metrics reflect only planned production time
In normal operations, you would:
- Create a weekly shift schedule that repeats consistently
- Define shift start and end times for each day
- Set production targets for each shift period
- Allow the system to automatically register any time outside these shifts as unplanned stops
When Irregular Patterns Might Be Considered
While we strongly recommend standardizing shift patterns wherever possible, there are limited scenarios where irregular scheduling might be unavoidable:
- Custom manufacturing with highly variable order patterns
- Seasonal operations where demand fluctuations require frequent schedule changes
- Multi-product facilities with complex changeover requirements
- Research and development manufacturing with unpredictable testing schedules
If you have determined that irregular shift patterns are absolutely necessary for your operation, Factbird provides an Excel-based import process. This should be used only as a last resort when standard scheduling cannot meet your operational requirements.
How the Process Works
- Download the Excel Template
- Complete the Schedule - Fill out the template with your specific shift requirements, including:
- Month and year information
- Shift start and end times
- Daily shift assignments for each day of the month
- Shift variant names and descriptions
- Submit to Support - Send the completed Excel file to our support team for processing and import
- Validation and Import - Our team will validate the data and import it into your system
