How to install a Siemens direct energy monitoring solution

SUMMARY

Use this guide to install a Siemens direct energy monitoring solution with a Factbird DUO. This solution directly measures electrical energy consumption using a Siemens energy meter and sends the data to Factbird for energy monitoring and analysis.

WHEN TO USE THIS

Use this guide if:

  • You are installing a Siemens direct energy monitoring solution.
  • You want to monitor electrical energy consumption using a certified energy meter.
  • You are connecting a Siemens energy meter to a Factbird DUO.

PREREQUISITES

Before starting:

  • Installation is performed by qualified electrical personnel.
  • You have a supported Siemens energy meter.
  • You have a Factbird DUO.
  • You have the required communication cables.
  • You have access to the machine's electrical cabinet.
  • The electrical supply has been safely isolated before installation begins.

Important

Installing an energy meter requires working inside an electrical cabinet. Always follow the Siemens safety instructions and local electrical regulations before carrying out the installation.

STEPS

1. Prepare the installation

Gather the required components:

  • Factbird DUO
  • Siemens energy meter
  • Communication cable
  • Power supply
  • DIN rail and mounting hardware (if required)
  • Wiring accessories

The following items are typically supplied by the installer rather than Factbird:

  • DIN rails
  • DIN terminal blocks
  • Cable markers
  • Cable lugs
  • Electrical wiring

2. Install the Siemens energy meter

  • Mount the Siemens energy meter inside the electrical cabinet.
  • Install the miniature circuit breaker (MCB), if required.
  • Secure the meter to the DIN rail.

3. Route the electrical supply through the energy meter

Modify the existing wiring so that the machine's main supply passes through the Siemens energy meter.

The energy meter directly measures:

  • Voltage
  • Current
  • Power
  • Energy consumption

Unlike clip-on current transducers, this solution measures electrical values directly rather than estimating them.

4. Connect the energy meter to the Factbird DUO

  • Connect the communication cable between the Siemens energy meter and the Factbird DUO.
  • Verify that all communication wiring is securely connected.

5. Power the system

  • Restore power to the electrical cabinet.
  • Verify that:
    • The Siemens energy meter powers on.
    • The Factbird DUO powers on.
    • No wiring faults are indicated.

6. Verify communication

Allow the Factbird DUO to establish communication with the energy meter.

Verify that:

  • The energy meter is transmitting data.
  • The DUO remains online.
  • Communication indicators show normal operation.

7. Configure the sensor in Factbird

Once the hardware installation is complete:

  • Configure the connected sensor as a Digital Energy Meter.

For detailed configuration instructions, see:

  • How to configure a digital energy meter

EXPECTED RESULT

After completing these steps:

  • The Siemens energy meter is installed.
  • The Factbird DUO communicates with the meter.
  • Energy consumption data is transmitted to Factbird.
  • The system is ready for software configuration and energy analysis.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Issue: The Siemens energy meter does not power on.

  • Try:Verify the incoming power supply.

  • Try: Check all electrical connections.
  • Try: Confirm the MCB is switched on.

Issue: No data appears in Factbird.

  • Try: Verify the communication cable between the energy meter and DUO.

  • Try: Confirm the DUO is online.
  • Try: Check that the digital energy meter has been configured correctly in Factbird.

Issue: The measured energy values appear incorrect.

  • Try: Verify that the machine's supply conductors have been routed through the energy meter correctly.

  • Try: Confirm the wiring matches the Siemens installation instructions.
  • Try: Check the meter configuration before commissioning.
