How to start batches automatically using a barcode scanner

WHEN TO USE THIS

Use this guide if:

• You want operators to start batches by scanning a barcode.
• Batch numbers are printed on production orders or labels.
• You want to reduce manual batch selection.
• You are using Factbird Barcode Solutions.

PREREQUISITES

Before starting:

• A barcode scanner has been installed and configured.
• The scanner is connected to the workstation or operator device.
• Production batches already exist in Factbird.
• Each batch has a unique barcode value.
• You have permission to configure barcode integrations.

STEPS

1. Prepare your batches

Ensure each production batch has a unique barcode value that matches the barcode printed on the production order or label.

If batches are imported automatically from an ERP system or spreadsheet, verify that the barcode information is included with each batch. 

2. Configure the barcode scanner

Configure the scanner according to the Factbird Barcode Solution installation guide.

Verify that:

• The scanner can read the required barcode format.
• The scanned value is transmitted correctly to Factbird.
• The scanner is connected to the operator workstation or device.

3. Enable barcode-based batch start

Configure the production line to use barcode scanning for batch selection.

Click “+ ADD PARAMETER” and fill in the field with the following information: 

4. Scan the batch barcode

When production is ready to begin:

• Scan the barcode on the production order or batch label.
• Factbird searches for the matching batch.
• If a matching batch is found, it is started automatically.

5. Verify the running batch

After scanning:

• Confirm the correct batch is shown as Running.
• Verify production counts are being recorded against the selected batch.
• Confirm production data is linked to the scanned batch.

EXPECTED RESULT

After completing these steps:

• Operators can start batches by scanning a barcode.
• The correct production batch is selected automatically.
• Production data is associated with the scanned batch.
• Manual batch selection is no longer required.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Issue: Scanning the barcode does not start a batch.

• Try: Verify the barcode matches an existing batch.

• Try: Confirm the scanner is connected correctly.
• Try: Check that barcode-based batch start has been configured for the production line.

Issue: The wrong batch starts.

• Try: Verify each batch uses a unique barcode.

• Try: Confirm the printed barcode matches the batch information stored in Factbird.

Issue: The barcode is not recognised.

• Try: Confirm the scanner supports the barcode symbology being used.

• Try: Test the barcode using another scanner.
• Try: Check that the barcode label is not damaged or unreadable.
