Introduction
This article will show how to manually reset the Factbird DUO's Wi-Fi credentials.
A reset of Wi-Fi credentials could be needed in certain special cases, for example when:
- You want to switch the DUO to cellular connectivity, but don't have immediate access to the Factbird system on a computer/phone/tablet.
- Your OT infrastructure has changed, making the DUO unable to communicate on your Wi-Fi network (Alternatively see article: Whitelist domains & Ports in Firewall).
- The DUO has entered into an unrecoverable state, e.g. after entering faulty or multiple Wi-Fi credentials.
- The Wi-Fi connection is no longer available while the "Fallback to cellular" mode has been disabled in the system for the DUO.
- Your Wi-Fi is still available, but you have lost internet connection from your ISP.
NOTE: A reset of Wi-Fi credentials will completely remove any Wi-Fi credentials stored on the device. Once this operation is done, you cannot automatically recover the credentials at a later time (neither on the DUO itself or via the Factbird system).
If you want to use Wi-Fi on the DUO after a reset, you will have to manually enter new credentials into the Factbird system.
NOTE: This article only applies to Factbird DUOs with a firmware version 2.9.0 or higher. Need to check what firmware your Duo is running? See this article: Where can I find the firmware version for my Factbird Duo?
Prerequisites
In order to perform a reset of the Factbird DUO's Wi-Fi credentials, you must ensure the following:
- The lid has been removed from the Factbird DUO (unscrew the 4 screws on the bottom of the device and remove the lid).
- The device is connected to the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and is powered on.
Check the Status of the Factbird DUO's Wi-Fi Modem
Before performing a reset of the Wi-Fi credentials, you can determine the status of the DUO's Wi-Fi modem by looking at the "WIFI" LED inside the DUO - see image below.
This LED directly indicates the operating status of the Wi-Fi modem and is controlled directly by the modem itself, without any dependencies on the Factbird DUO firmware. The table below shows the different operating modes of the Wi-Fi modem:
| Status | Description | LED Behavior | LED Picture |
| IDLE | DUO Wi-Fi modem is waiting for setup commands and is not connected to Wi-Fi | Steady orange/lime |
|
| IDLE | DUO Wi-Fi modem is waiting for connection commands and is not connected to Wi-Fi | Steady green |
|
| CONNECTING | DUO Wi-Fi modem is trying to connect to the specified Wi-Fi network, but is not yet connected | Steady purple |
|
| CONNECTED | DUO Wi-Fi modem is connected to the specified Wi-Fi network. This only shows the connection status to the Wi-Fi network itself and not necessarily an active internet connection. The DUO could potentially still be blocked from communicating by a firewall. |
Steady blue |
Typically when a reset of the DUO Wi-Fi credentials is needed, you should observe either the purple or blue color to some extent.
If the DUO is having issues establishing a stable connection, it is possible to see the "WIFI" LED cycling between the green -> purple -> blue colors.
Perform the Reset
First you need to locate the "USER" button inside the Factbird DUO.
While the device is powered on, press and hold the button firmly for 2-3 seconds.
NOTE: it is important not to press the "USER" button longer than specified, as this could result in the press being discarded by the Factbird DUO.
You should then observe the "WIFI" LED turning to a steady green color, and after some time the Factbird DUO should connect to an available cellular network and the Factbird System.
The procedure sometimes needs to be repeated if it did not work the first time. Wait 30-60 seconds between each attempt.
Example of Reset
In this example the Factbird DUO is connected via Wi-Fi to the Factbird System.
A steady blue "STATUS" LED is observed on the front of the Factbird DUO, as well as a steady blue "WIFI" LED.
Additionally, it can be observed that the "GSM" LEDs are not active, indicating the cellular modem is powered off.
The Wi-Fi network is removed and is no longer available.
The Factbird DUO has been configured with "Fallback to cellular" disabled in the Factbird System.
The Factbird DUO changes to have a blinking red "STATUS" LED on the front, and the the "WIFI" LED starts cycling between purple and green, indicating that it is trying to connect to the Wi-Fi network, but is unable to establish a connection.
The "GSM" LEDs are still not active.
The "USER" button is now pressed for 3 seconds.
The Factbird DUO "WIFI" LED now turns to a steady green color, and the "GSM" LEDs are observed to turn on. This indicates the cellular modem is powered on.
After a little while the "STATUS" LED turns to a steady green and the Factbird DUO is once again online, now via a cellular connection instead of Wi-Fi.
Final remarks
In case the procedure presented in this article did not work, please do not hesitate to submit a request for additional support on the topic.
The "GSM" LEDs mentioned in this article is not covered in depth. However, for cellular connectivity, both LEDs needs to be turned on. In some cases they can be turned on, even while Wi-Fi operation is specified. This does not mean the device is connected via cellular, only that the modem is powered on and ready to attach if needed. The most reliable way of determining if cellular connectivity has been achieved is by observing a green "STATUS" LED on the front of the Factbird DUO.
This concludes the article on manually resetting the Wi-Fi credentials of the Factbird DUO.
