How to Connect a Factbird Duo to Wi-Fi

Summary: Use this guide to connect a Factbird DUO device to a local Wi-Fi network. It is intended for those installing devices on Wi-Fi-enabled sites and especially users with unreliable cellular reception.

When to Use This

Use this guide if:
  • You have unreliable cell reception on-site

  • You want your Factbird DUO to connect to a local Wi-Fi network

  • You are installing a device on-site with Wi-Fi access

Prerequisites

Before starting:
  • The device is claimed and visible in your Factbird account

  • The device is powered on

  • The device is within range of and connected to a cellular network

  • You have Super User access to cloud.factbird.com

  • You have the Wi-Fi SSID and password

  • The device MAC address is added to your network allowlist (if MAC filtering is enabled)

  • The Wi-Fi network meets the supported specifications listed in the device datasheet

  • A non-business-critical network is selected (recommended)

    • *The Factbird DUO is a secure device that does not run an operating system, making it very resilient to cyber attacks, but we always recommend using a non-business-critical network for connecting our devices.

Steps

  1. Log in to cloud.factbird.com with a Super User account.

  2. Go to DEVICES.

  3. Search for and select the device you want to configure.

  4. Under Device Config, click the Wi-Fi tab.
(*If the Wi-Fi tab is not visible, the device may not support Wi-Fi. Contact Support.)

  5. Enable Wi-Fi.

  6. Click ADD CONNECTION.

  7. Enter the Wi-Fi network name (SSID).

  8. Enter the Wi-Fi password.

  9. Click SAVE.

  10. Wait for the device to establish the Wi-Fi connection.

  11. Restart the device after the connection is established.

  12. Confirm the connection:

    1. Verify the device status LED turns blue.

    2. Open the Sensors tab.

    3. Open Live View for a connected sensor (from the sensors tab in the device configuration) and confirm data is incoming.

Expected Result

After completing these steps:
  • The device connects to the specified Wi-Fi network

  • The device LED turns blue

  • Live sensor data appears in Factbird Cloud

Troubleshooting

  • Issue: Device does not connect to Wi-Fi
    • Try: Verify the SSID and password are entered correctly (check uppercase/lowercase, special characters, and spaces)
    • Try: Move the device closer to the Wi-Fi router

  • Issue: Device cannot access the internet
    • Try: Confirm the Factbird device MAC address is added to your firewall "allowlist" or "whitelist" (if you have a firewall set up)
    • Try: Ensure required domains and ports are whitelisted on your network
      • The MAC address can be found on the device label (Factbird DUO)
      • Once added to the whitelist, proceed with Step 1 in this article
      • For more information about whitelisting domains and ports when using your own network, see the related article linked at the bottom of this page.

  • Issue: Wi-Fi settings cannot be applied

    • Try: Connect the device to the cellular network (this is the default setting) first.  The device cannot be connected to Wi-Fi unless it is first connected to the cellular network.

  • Issue: Wi-Fi tab is missing

    • Try: Confirm the device model supports Wi-Fi

    • Try: Contact Support to verify device compatibility
